Laurits B.Holst Danish Oil Tranquil Seas

We are delighted to offer for sale this superb, tranquil oil on canvas by the renowned Danish artist LAURITS BERNHARD HOLST, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 94 for 1894. The painting depicts a small fleet of Nordland fishing boats sailing along the Norwegian coast. These boats, which have a high prow and stern, have a square sail and are traditionally used for fishing in the Nordland counties of Norway and around the Lofoten Islands. The painting of the sky is remarkable and is typical of his work.
LAURITS (Z) BERNHARD HOLST, 1848-1934, was born in Bogense in Denmark on August 20, 1848. He studied art at the Copenhagen School of Art and also in the US. He seems to have painted in various places around the world, but was in firstly Chicago, where he taught Emil Carlsson in return for him cleaning his brushes, and then California in the USA in the late 1800s, painting coastal scenes. He was living in Warrington, Lancashire 1883 and 1885, intermittently in Scarborough between 1878 and 1892, Elsinore in Denmark to England in 1884 and 1891, Kensington in London in 1895 and died in Bournemouth in 1934.
In the UK, he exhibited 11 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 11 paintings at the Royal Academy and 1 at the Royal Hibernian Academy. It is believed he also exhibited in the US.
Biographical details for this artist may be found in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists and Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child. His works are often listed in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market.
