Laurence Roche B.1944 Acrylics Industrial Seaside
We are offering for sale this large, minutely detailed acrylic painting by the Welsh artist Laurence Roche, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. There is a label on the reverse, signed by the artist, entitling the painting 'Industrial Seaside Past and Present' and dating it 1989. The painting depicts a bright landscape over an estuary, with railway tracks to the centre foreground, with lampposts along a road to the right. Silhouetted against the sky to the right and left hand banks are many cranes. There are two fishermen in the centre. The artist exhibits an interesting technique, with the foreground painted in great detail with very fine brush strokes, while the sky is executed in wide flat strokes.
Laurence Roche was born in 1944 in Goodwicke, in Pembrokeshire, Wales. He studied at Swansea College of art 1962-1965, before attending Edinburgh College of Art for another three years. He trained to become an Art Teacher in Edinburgh and taught at schools in Reading and Colchester before becoming a full-time artist in 1979.
He was the President of the Guild of Railway Artists from 1998-2002. His subjects include railways, industrial scenes, landscapes and seascapes. In the early 1990s he was artist-in-residence at Allied Steel and Wire. Some of his work is available in print form.
There are four of his paintings in the National Collection, 2 at the University of Warwick Art Collection and 2 at Edinburgh College of Art.
The painting is framed in a 2 1/2" gilt frame and linen slip. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
