A magnificent large antique William IV period gilt convex butlers mirror dating from circa 1835. Having a concave cushioned frame with moulded edge, quartered with leaf-decorated collars, surrounding a convex mirror plate. A really good example with gilt gesso frame with beautiful water gilding.

Convex mirrors were often placed in the dining rooms of Georgian country houses. One glance at the convex mirror and a butler could observe the whole room allowing him to oversee guests at mealtime whilst keeping a discreet distance. Hence these mirrors became known as “Butlers mirrors”.

Good condition – some light age and foxing to the mirror plate. A few cracks to the frame commensurate with age. Beautiful water gilding to frame.
