Large Pair of Raoul Dufy Floral Prints (1877-1953)
This is a large pair of beautiful floral prints by the artist Raoul Dufy (3 June 1877 – 23 March 1953). The vintage prints are of gladioli, roses and other flowers they have a very attractive pastel colour palette with shades of coral, pink and green and have been executed in the flowing loose style typical of Dufy. Each print is signed. They are very nicely presented in good deep frames painted a soft green with a gilded outer edge, which suit the prints really well. These are a good size, measuring 74 cms by 64 cms overall including the frame.
Dufy was a French Fauvist painter, brother of Jean Dufy. He developed a colorful, decorative style that became fashionable for designs of ceramics and textile as well as decorative schemes for public buildings. He is noted for scenes of open-air social events. He was also a draftsman, printmaker, book illustrator, scenic designer, a designer of antique furniture and a planner of public spaces.
In 1900 Dufy went to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He painted in an Impressionist style in his early work, but by 1905 he had begun to employ the broad brushstrokes and bright colours typical of the Fauve artists. A 1907 exhibition of Paul Cezanne’s work convinced Dufy to adopt temporarily more subdued colours and structured compositions. He worked in a Cubist influenced style with the painters Georges Braque and Émile-Othon Friesz during 1908 and 1909, but he soon returned to his more carefree Fauvist approach.
PROVENANCE: These were formerly the property of a Lady of Title from her London residence in Kensington.
