Large Oil On Canvas by David Wood MBE c.1966.
Large mid 20th.c. oil on canvas titled Flower Table by the Yorkshire artist David Wood MBE c.1966. Painted in a bold modernist style in thick oil paint on a textured and worked canvas measuring 36″ x 48″. Presented in the original simple painted wooden frame. Original exhibition label on the rear dated 1966 with the artist’s address in Dewsbury, the title and price. Some damage to the surface of the painting, generally very good condition. Sold with a letter authenticating the painting by his wife Judith Wood MBE.
Dimensions: width 41½”, height 53½”, depth 3″.
David Wood (1937 – 2020) was trained in painting and lithography at Wakefield College of Art during the mid 1950’s, a uniquely exciting time in British art. Following teacher training at Manchester College of Art and National Service with the Royal Air Force in Cyprus, Wood taught art at HM Prison Wakefield before a 20 year career as Head of Art and Drama at Allerton Grange School in Leeds (1967 to 1987), where his pupils included the artist Damien Hirst. His work is included in the collection of the Hepworth Museum Wakefield. In 2002 both David and Judith Wood were individually awarded MBEs for services to the Arts.
