Jugendstil Silver Cream Jug & Sugar Bowl, W Binder
Here we have a striking Jugendstil / Art Nouveau German Sterling Silver Cream Jug and Sugar Bowl. Each piece stands on three feet with a flowing Jugendstil design from which a curving feature flows up the body. The cream jug has a broad lip and an acanthus scroll handle whilst the sugar bowl has a wavy rim.
Jugendstil was the specifically German form of Art Nouveau. It contains many of the style features of the wider Nouveau movement but with a Germanic twist.
The cream jug and sugar bowl are made by renowned silversmith Wilhelm Theodor Binder in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany and date to the period c.1890 to c.1910. Wilhelm Binder originally founded a retail business in 1868 before beginning to manufacture in 1873. Schwäbisch Gmünd was one of the major centres for the German silver and gold industry and by 1900 Wilhelm Binder was one of the largest companies operating there. The firm is best known for their high quality Jugendstil and Art Deco pieces and remained in operation up until the company was bought out at the start of the Second World War.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the bare minimum of superficial surface wear that has to be expected after around 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 10cm / 3.9ins from lip to handle, 6cm / 2.4ins across and stands 8.2cm / 3.2ins high. The sugar bowl is 7.3cm / 2.9ins in diameter and stands 5cm / 1.9ins high. The pair together weighs in at a substantial 143.9g / 5.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The underside of each piece is marked with the crescent and crown to show that it is German assayed silver, the stamp 925, to show that it is Sterling Silver (92.5% pure) grade and the WTB stamp, with the T shaped as a hammer, which is the makers' mark for Wilhelm T. Binder.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
