We are offering fro sale this very well executed head and shoulders portrait study of an Academic, by the artist bearing the initials J.P., who has monogrammed the painting to the top right hand corner and dated it 1921. The painting depicts an older gentleman, with a kindly expression, waring a black academic gown with burgundy facings. He has blue eyes, white hair and a full white beard.

We have looked in our book of monograms and the only one that is similar to the one on this portrait is by an artist called John Pedder R.I. RBC, (1850-1929. He was primarily a watercolourist, but painted some oils, mostly landscapes including figures and animals. We only managed to find one portrait, of the few that he painted, which is in the National Library of Wales. which is signed J. Pedder, so this is all too uncertain for us to attribute this portrait to him, although its execution is as good as the portrait of the Reverand Morgan in Wales and the background colour is remarkably similar.

The portrait is newly framed in a 2 5/8 inch black lacquer frame with red detailing. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.

Medium: Oils on Winsor & Newton canvas

Condition: Very good. As shown in the photograph, there are six patches to the rear of the canvas, but the front has been restored and the surface is clean and taut, although some slight evidence of the restoration is visible.
