Joseph Edward Southall R.W.S., R.B.S.A., N.E.A.C. (1861-1944).
Signed with Monogram twice and dated 30th Dec 1901 and 6th Mar 1902.
Pencil and watercolour heightened with white on bristol board.
Framed and Glazed.
J. E. Southall painted historical and mythological subjects and landscapes. He exhibited three works at the R.A. 1895-7 including 'Cinderella' and 'Man in a Fez'. He was born in Nottingham and lived in Birmingham and was the founder of the Society of Painters in Tempera, 1900. His more mature works show the influence of the Italian Primitives as can be seen in his highly accomplished Tempera paintings on view at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
