John William Buxton Knight oil on canvas

John William Buxton Knight (1843-1902) was an English landscape painter, born in Sevenoaks, Kent. He died in Dover. He had his first exhibited painting at the Royal Academy in 1861 when he was just 18. Over his long career he exhibited 72 paintings there. He has a painting in The Tate
He has been compared to Constable in his adherence to landscape and nature, and was a very highly considered artist. He has a considerable presence on the internet and a long Wikipedia entry which gives much more detail.
This painting, tentatively entitled 'Hop Picking In Kent' shows a woman with her two children picking from the hedge. A wooden gate helps the classic composition, while off in the distance a man and his dog (Jack Russel?) appear to be watching, or perhaps walking over to join in?
The painting is in good/very good condition. Some drying crackalure and a few edge flakes. It sits a little loose in its frame, as you can see in the photos. It is not glazed
It is on show in the shop, and can be collected from there. Alternatively I can arrange delivery by courier, please contact me My shop at 1 Bridge St, Dulverton TA22 9HJ is open
