John Vicat Cole (1903-1975) Antiques Shop
John Vicat Cole (1903-1975)
Antiques - No 3 Campden Street, London.
Signed: John Cole (lower right). Painted below the window is the name Jean W Sewell - Park 3122. Label attached to reverse reads Antiques in Campden St. off Church St Kensington.
Oil on board, contained in a modern painted frame
Provenance: Christies, stencil mark 22ZR
The shop in this painting was at the time occupied by Jean Sewell, a specialist dealer in pottery and porcelain. Painted sometime in the 60s or early 70s. The development of Kensington Church Street as a key location for the antique ceramic trade was so much so that the street became known as ‘Crock Alley’. Indeed, many of the famous names in the antique ceramic trade were located in the Street Graham & Oxley, Hoff Antiques, Jean Sewell, Klaber & Klaber, Jonathan Horne….. The shop is now run by Simon Spero, dealing in fine 18th century English porcelain.
John Cole was son of the artist Rex Vicat Cole and continued the illustrious careers in painting of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Cole’s early works were landscapes but his personal artistic voice found itself in small paintings of London scenery and shop fronts. In these gem like paintings Cole was able to apply the breadth of his technique in oils to the portrayal of surfaces of flaking plaster, painted stone and the glittering window displays of antique shops and silversmiths. He captured the architecture and colour of the little Georgian and Victorian shops of the West End of London with affection and dispassionate observation. During WWII he joined the Civil Defence Heavy Rescue Service in Kensington and was often the first to enter the wreckage of the historic buildings that he had grown to love.
