John Seerey-Lester B.1945 Oil The News Vendor 1978
We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely oil painting on canvas entitled 'The News Vendor' by the artist John Vernon Seerey-Lester, who has signed the painting 'Seerey-Lester' in the lower right hand corner. This painting has exceptional provenance as with the painting we will supply a copy of an email from Suzie Seerey-Lester to its previous owner, detailing the title of the painting and that it was commissioned by its first owner and painted by John in March 1978. (A jpg of the provenance can be supplied on request.)
The painting depicts an Edwardian street scene, with a small, pedestrianised street of shops, leading off a cobbled street. There is an art gallery to the left, next to the sign for the Star Inn and a grocers shop to the right, but the main subject, the news vendor is in the centre foreground, shouting out the main news of the day. Although we are not aware of the location, it looks like The Lanes in Brighton or The Shambles in York, but we cannot confirm this.
John Vernon Seerey-Lester was born in Manchester in the fourth quarter of 1945. He showed an interest in art at an early age and after working as a journalist, magazine editor and local government press officer, he became a professional artist in 1974. He achieved great popularity in the UK for his nostalgic paintings of Victorian and Edwardian England, of which this painting is an example.
In 1980, having been inspired by the work of the great wildlife artist David Shepherd, he travelled to Africa and began painting wildlife, which has mainly been his chosen subject matter ever since and he has travelled to most parts of the world. In 1982, he moved to America and has now become an American citizen. His wife Suzie is also a wildlife artist.
His work hangs in the White House and in many museum and private collections throughout the world. His latest works, apart from pure wildlife, are a series of paintings based on the White Hunter and the hunting heritage of North America. For a fuller biography and examples of his and Susie's work, we suggest that you put his name into google search and visit his own website.
The painting is framed in a 3 1/2" part gilded wooden frame and linen slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 19 1/2" x 15 3/8" - 49.5cm x 39cm
Frame size: 27" x 23" - 68.55cm x 58.4cm
