John Ogilby's Africa c1670 - five prints
These late seventeenth century topographical engravings have a somewhat complex publication history but we believe them to be from John Ogilby's work 'Africa' published in 1670 based upon the 1668 Dutch printing, by Jacob van Meurs, of Olfert Dapper's 'Nauleurige Beschrijvinghe Der Afrikaensche'. Later editions were also published in Leiden by Pieter Van der Aa appearing in his work 'La Galerie Agreable Du Monde'. Many of these later prints having received the attentions of the hand colourist over the years. These examples come from the English edition, published by John Ogilby with the grand title of 'Africa: being, An Accurate Description of the Regions of Egypt, Barbary, Lybia, and Billedulgerid, the Land of Negroes, Guinee, Aethiopia, and the Abysinnes, with All the Adjacente Islands', with the Dutch titles and 10-point keys (to Algier, Thunis and Tripolie duplicated in English.
