John Ogilby's Africa c1670 - five prints

These late seventeenth century topographical engravings have a somewhat complex publication history but we believe them to be from John Ogilby's work 'Africa' published in 1670 based upon the 1668 Dutch printing, by Jacob van Meurs, of Olfert Dapper's 'Nauleurige Beschrijvinghe Der Afrikaensche'. Later editions were also published in Leiden by Pieter Van der Aa appearing in his work 'La Galerie Agreable Du Monde'. Many of these later prints having received the attentions of the hand colourist over the years. These examples come from the English edition, published by John Ogilby with the grand title of 'Africa: being, An Accurate Description of the Regions of Egypt, Barbary, Lybia, and Billedulgerid, the Land of Negroes, Guinee, Aethiopia, and the Abysinnes, with All the Adjacente Islands', with the Dutch titles and 10-point keys (to Algier, Thunis and Tripolie duplicated in English.
The five we have are as follows -
1) The City of Algier - De Stadt Algier, Geteekent door R. Zeeman. Plate size aprpoximately 260 by 365mm. Laid on paper backing and with some paper loss top right and lower centre.Trimmed to within or near plate impression.
2) The City Gegery - De Stadt Gigeri. Image size approximately 225 by 310mm.Full plate impression.
3) The City of Tripolie - De Stadt Tripolis. Image size approximately 260 by 345mm. Trimmed to within or near plate impression. xxxxLodge Library stamp to rear.
4) Thunis. Image size approximately 260 by 335mm. Trimmed to within plate impression top and bottom. Latr paper rectangle glued to rear.
5) The Castle Cormantine - Kasteel van Cormantin. Image size approximately 240 by 330mm. This was firstly an English fort on Africa's Gold Coast but was renamed Fort Amsterdam when captured by the Dutch.
All have varying edge imperfections, the normal centre folds and there is a small amount of foxing and staining, but this is minimal.
If you are searching for perfect copies of these rare prints then ours are most probably not for you but when appropriately framed they will display well and are just £390 for all five.
