Within a 19th Century Gilt Composite Frame.
John Martin (1789 - 1854) specialised in apocolyptic subjects which reached a huge audience through prints. This print belongs to a group of 'judgement pictures', inspired by the final book of the New Testament The Book of Revalations. It closely follows the Biblical account of events leading up to the Last Judgement. "There was a great earthquake and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair and the moon became as blood. Every mountain and island were moved out of their places." The original painting can be seen at Tate Britain. PriceSOLD DimensionsImage 61.5 x 95.5 cm.
