John Holland Sr. fl.1831-79 Marine Oil Bass Rock
We are delighted to offer for sale, this large, atmospheric seascape oil painting by the Victorian artist John Holland Senior, who has signed the painting with his very distinctive signature in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a rocky coast on a stormy day, with the breakers rolling in and the sea gushing over the rocks. There is a circular rocky island off the coast and seagulls are wheeling in the sky. Unfortunately, we are not totally sure of the location, but it is probably Bass Rock, which is located in the Firth of Forth, opposite Tantallon Castle. The lighthouse on Bass Rock was constructed in 1902, so would not have been present at the time this painting was executed.
John Holland Senior was a Nottingham painter of landscapes and coastal scenes. He exhibited at Suffolk Street 1831-1879 and at the British Institution 1865-1866. It has been suggested that his son John Jr. (1830-1886) was also a landscape and portrait painter, but we can find no record of his birth, although according to The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, there was a Samuel Holland in Nottingham, a painter and picture dealer, who was probably the brother of John Senior, who did have a son John, who was born in 1830. The census record for 1851, shows Samuel Holland, who had two sons, Samuel S. (a listed artist) and John, aged 21, so he may have been a nephew of John Holland Senior, who used Senior once John began to exhibit. Samuel Senior, Samuel Jr. and John are listed as having the occupation of Painter, as is their lodger Samuel Gregory.
There are 18 of his paintings in the National Collection, available at ArtUK.org, which will give details of where they can be viewed.
