John Hall Thorpe Woodblock Print Chinese Vase
We are offering for sale this very attractive wood cut print by John Hall Thorpe, who has signed the print to the lower right hand corner in pencil within the plate and entitled it to the left hand side 'The Chinese Vase'. This is one of the largest and more unusual of his woodcuts and depicts a blue and white cylindrical chinese vase containing anemones and ranunculi, in tones of brown, beige and terracotta.
John Hall Thorpe was born in Victoria, Australia in 1874. He learnt the art of wood block printing in Sydney in the early 1890s, where he worked as an illustrator and staff artist at the Sydney Mail. He studied art both in Sydney and at Heatherlys's after his move to London in 1902 and by 1918 he had commenced the wood block printing for which he earned international acclaim in the 1920s and 30s.
He had his first one-man show in London in 1918 which was a great success. He printed and published every one of his prints personally and they were sold not only in England, but in France and the US. He had a studio initially in Recliffe Square but later had a gallery in South Kensington.
His brightly coloured woodcuts were his reaction to what he felt was the drabness of homes between the wars. He died in London in 1947.
The print has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and is framed in a very appropriate 3/4" gilt bamboo style frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 18" x 11 5/8" - 45.75cm x 29.5cm
Frame size: 24 3/4" x 18" - 62.85cm x 45.75cm
Medium: Wood block print on paper
Condition: Very good condition. The mounts are new and the frame is in very good condition.
