John Carlisle B.1834 Watercolour Highland Cattle John Carlisle 1834-1915 Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a beautifully and minutely executed large watercolour of panoramic form by the London artist John Carlisle, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1979. The painting depicts a herd of rather wild looking Highland cattle being driven along a track beside a loch, with mountains on the opposing side. There is a flock of birds to the left hand side above the edge of the loch and shafts of sunlight are being cast down through breaks in the cloud.

John Carlisle was born in Clifton, Bristol in 1834. He attended Bruce Castle School in Tottenham, London as a boarder. It was an interesting and progressive school, which at that time, has a science laboratory and a swimming pool. The school was founded on the belief that learning occurred better when given with kindness and the school was originally founded in Edgbaston, Birmingham by Sir Rowland Hill, who was a teacher and social reformer, who is credited with the invention of the postage stamp and the modern postal system. Interestingly, the highly regarded Victorian classicist painter Herbert James Draper, also attended Bruce Castle School, although much later than John Carlisle.

After the 1851 Census we could find no further information until the Census of 1871, where he was living in Dorking, Surrey and his wife Lilian (Elizabeth Lilian Tyrrell) born 1842 in Jamaica, who he had married in 1865, his two daughters and two servants. By this time he was listed as an artist. In 1881, he was living in London at 56 Adelaide Road, West Hampstead, and by now had 3 daughters and 2 sons. The family was living in a very affluent part of London and still had two servants, so must have been making a good living.

In 1891, he was visiting his brother in Hampshire, who was a Retired Major in the King's Royal Rifles and John was listed as an artist and Retired Captain in 5 Fusilier Regiment. There was no trace of his family being in the country at this time. In 1901 and 1911, he was still working and he and Lilian were living at 51 Melrose Gardens, West Kensington. He died in 1915 at this address.

He seems to have been a watercolourist solely and we have found no oils by him in auction listings. He exhibited from 1966-1915 and was known to have painted in Devon, Wales, Guernsey and Scotland. He also visited Italy at some stage. He was a prolific exhibitor in both London e.g. 190 at the Dudley Gallery between 1880 & 1915 and also in the provinces. Cattle and sheep figure prominently in his watercolours.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountboard and is framed in a 1 1/4" gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
