Jef Friboulet (1919-2003) French Abstract Expressionist

Translation from French Wikipedia
“Émile Jean Friboulet was born on November 11, 1919 in Fécamp, to the marriage of Albert Friboulet, fisherman from Newfoundland , and Eugénie Monnier. She was hospitalized just after his birth and with her father leaving for Newfoundland for long periods, he spent almost 3 years at the fishermen\'s orphanage in Fécamp. He developed a passion for drawing from a very young age, obtained his certificate of studies on June 16 , 1931 and immediately entered working life: he was successively a grocery boy, port employee, registration clerk, employee in a garage and employee of a transport company while continuing to practice drawing.
In 1939 he joined the air force . In 1940, he left for Africa with the Bourgogne group. He had a lot of free time and resumed drawing and painting. He received the nickname Jef by the American forces because of the initials EJF marked on his luggage, which the Americans transformed into JEF . He then meets in Bamako Horcholl and Harris in Bamako , official painters of the army. His superiors, aware in their turn of Jef Friboulet\'s talent, appointed him photographer and painter of the armies. He then took care of painting frescoes in the barracks and the mess. His first exhibition took place in Bamako in 1942. His new status made him meet Wurtemberg and Professor Albert Schwarz, from whom he learned a lot.
The war ended, he returned to Fécamp where he worked as a illuminator on parchment for a convent before becoming a bus driver. From his marriage to Renée Vaudin, the July 12 , 1944 , will be born four children: Christian, Régis, Patrice and Marie-Catherine.
His job as a driver gives him the leisure to ride his bicycle and paint the landscapes of the Pays de Caux . In 1954, he was rewarded for the first time for the Gardener and he exhibited for the first time in Paris . The exhibition proposals and the support of the regional and then national press meant that he quit his job as a driver to start painting as a professional. He then opened a large workshop in Fécamp where he welcomed many amateur and professional painters.
His son Régis died in 1964 and Jef Friboulet went into a new period of his painting was of mystical and religious inspiration. He begins to exhibit a lot abroad and travels around Israel . He also painted for the churches of Fécamp and Yport and mounted two exhibitions on the Bible . He also set up an association in his workshop to train young painters. After having lived all his life in Fécamp , he left to live in Yport , a remote and isolated village where he found tranquility. He painted until the end of his life, May 13, 2003.”
