This is a beautiful 19th century hand coloured woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada 1786-1865. Kunisada was also known as Utagawa Toyokuni which is the signature here. He was the most popular and successful artist of ukiyo-e wood block prints in 19th century Japan. In his own time his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. The woodblock depicts a beauty by a river reading, in traditional dress with blossom in the background.
This is in an attractive smart dark wooden frame that suit it admirably.
The frame measures 53 cms by 43 cms.
