Japanese Reverse Glass Painting. Geisha and Child
This is an absolutely charming 19th century, Japanese reverse glass painting.
Set in a garden landscape with trees and a mountain in the distance, the painting features an immaculately dressed lady and her child enjoying a happy encounter with a hovering dragonfly. (See below)
The painting is in very good antique condition and painted in a bright palette.
There is a small chip off the lower right corner. (See photo 6, the painted surface on the rear of the glass with the back board removed)
Fine deep gilt period frame and red slip.
The dragonfly in Japanese Culture:
The dragonfly is the inspiration behind many works of art in Japan. They symbolize power, agility and victory. It is called the "victory insect", or kachimushi, because of its hunting prowess and also because it is known to never retreat. ALL OF OUR ITEMS INCLUDE FREE UK MAINLAND DELIVERY.
