A striking Japanese Kibori Kuma, hand-carved from richly stained wood and depicting a bear in mid-stride with a salmon gripped in its jaws. The bear’s fur is rendered in rhythmic, flowing cuts, while the fish is delicately detailed with visible scales and fins, capturing a vivid moment of instinct and motion. This particular piece bears inscriptions on each paw, including a date—1970.7.14—and Japanese characters that may indicate the artisan’s name or workshop. The underside reveals the carving marks and grain, affirming its hand-crafted origin. Likely produced in Hokkaido, this sculpture reflects the enduring tradition of Kibori Kuma: a fusion of Ainu reverence for nature and early 20th-century Japanese folk art, inspired by Swiss Black Forest carvings.
