James A. Kirby Oil Canvas Trompe L'oeil Still Life

We are offering for sale this unusual trompe l'oeil still life oil on canvas laid to board, by the artist James Alfred Kirby, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a Model Maker's bench, with an almost finished model of a three masted galleon with all its rigging in place. The plans for the ship are on the bench, together with a glass jar of artist's brushes, a paint rag, a pair of scissors, a paint pot, a pair of scissors, a tube of oil paint, a bottle of beer?, and a glass.
James Alfred Kirby, 1917-1999, was a painter in oil of marine related subjects. Other than this, we have been unable to find any further biographical information.
There are two of his paintings in the National Collection. One of these entitled 'Happier Days, Trawlers off Norway' is in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the other entitled 'Low Tide, Low Spirits' is in the City of London Corporation collection at the Guildhall Art Gallery in London, which was painted in 1966.
There are also two auction results available at findartinfo for his work.
The painting has been newly framed in a 2 3/4" gilt frame and is ready to hang.
