James A. Kirby 1917-1999 Oil Trawlers In Moonlight
We are offering for sale this very serene marine oil on board, by the artist James Alfred Kirby, who has signed the painting James A. Kirby with a fish under his signature, in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts two trawlers, with their masthead and navigation lights on, on a course to pass each other, under a moonlit sky. There are islands in the distance.
James Alfred Kirby, was born in Lambeth, in London, in 1917, the son of a clerk in the City. He married his wife in 1942 in Lambeth and we cannot find any evidence that he was in the military durng WWII. He was a painter in oil of marine related subjects. He lived in Tunbridge Wells in his later years and died there in 1999. Other than this, we have been unable to find any further biographical information.
There are two of his paintings in the National Collection. One of these entitled 'Happier Days, Trawlers off Norway' is in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the other entitled 'Low Tide, Low Spirits' is in the City of London Corporation collection at the Guildhall Art Gallery in London, which was painted in 1966. These can be viewed at ArtUK.org.
At least a doen of his marine oils have come to the market in recent years.
The painting is framed in a 1 3/4 inch silver frame. It will be supplied with new hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.

Condition: Very good condition. No damage, craquelure or paint loss. The frame is in very good condition.
