J.A. McColvin 1864-1920 Oil Landscape
We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the artist James Andrew McColvin, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner with his partly monogrammatic signature, as shown. The painting depicts a view of a cliff top overlooking the sea, with a small vessel visible in the distance. There are some cottages perched on the cliff top, and a windswept fishergirl watching for the return of the fleet. She has put down her basket, which she would carry on her back to hold the fish. There are dark clouds scudding across the sky and her red scarf is blowing in the wind.
John Andrew McColvin 1864-1920, was born in Winlaton, Durham in 1864. In the 1881 Census, he was living in Newcastle and was apprenticed to a jeweller. He married his wife Isabella (nee Stewart) in Newcastle in 1889 and by 1891 was living at 82 Mowbray Street, Heaton, Newcastle with his wife and son and was listed as an Artist Painter. In 1901 he was living at Whitley, Tynemouth also making his living as an artist. In 1911 he moved to 12 Blackhorse Lane, East Croydon and subsequently to 38 Lebanon Road, where he died in 1920, leaving a wife and four children.
He did not appear to exhibit his work, as there are no records in any of our reference books, but there are 5 of his painting in the National Collection, 2 with the National Trust, 2 with N. E. Lincolnshire Museum Service and 1 at Haworth Art Gallery. These can be viewed online at BBC- Your Paintings.
There is a great deal of confusion about the correct name of this artist, as on the auction sites and he is often referred to as James Andrew McColvin, J. Colvin, J. M. Colvin, M. Colvin We can state quite categorically that his name, according to Births Marriages and Deaths and Census Records, is John Andrew McColvin.
The painting is newly framed in a very nice 3" ornate frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
