Condition Report:
This is a fine quality antique Italian wall mirror, with a Renaissance influence, set within a fine quality decoratively floral carved beech fame, incorporating a bevelled mirror, circa 1870, in excellent condition. The mirror has been adapted from a dressing table into a wall mirror. There are nominal old use marks to the beech frame, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The foliate carvings are intact and in excellent condition. The mirror retains its original bevelled glass, which is in excellent original condition, considering its age. The mirror retains its original glass, which is in good overall condition, with signs of foxing and other marks (please see photos). “Foxing” is a term used to describe silvering in antique mirrors that has deteriorated and turned misty, or appears to have tarnished in areas. Light “foxing” serves to demonstrate the pleasing patina of age. The back of the mirror retains its original backboard, with a replacement metal hanging brackets and strong rope (for safety reasons). This Italian wall mirror is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to be used.
History of Italian Furniture:
Traditional Italian furniture has been celebrated and cherished for thousands upon thousands of years. Italian furniture design is well-loved for its mixture of craftsmanship and style. The 1700 and 1800s is when Italian furniture broke from the rest of Europe. Other countries were entering their own decadent periods. The French were just beginning the Rococo stage. Italian artisans were simplifying, however, while everyone else got fancier. Italian furniture makers traded in elaborate scrolling for simpler geometric shapes during this era. Vibrant colours were replaced by more neutral palettes. This simplification wouldn’t last, though. The 19th Century brought a revival of Gothic and Rococo styles to Italian designers. The styles favoured during the Italian Renaissance made a comeback during the 1800s, as well.
