Irénée Rochard "Seagull flying over a wave"
Art Deco sculpture "Seagull flying over a wave" in bronze and marble by Irénée Rochard, France c1935
Splendid sculpture representing a seagull flying over a wave, made of bronze and resting on a marble base. Following the style of the renowned sculpture of French origin, Irénée Rochard, inscribed in the Art Déco style of the first third of the last century. With an asymmetric and dynamic composition, the bird rests on the surface of a wave and spreads its wings to remain stable. With few details, it achieves a realistic scene. The surface of the bronze has a polished finish. On the back, “Made in France” appears twice, both on the bottom and on one of the wings. About Irénée Rochard (1906-1984) Irénée Félix René Rochard was an artist of French origin, especially recognized for her animal sculptures. He studied at the School of Fine Arts and Decorative Arts and was a member of the National Society of Fine Arts. Her work was influenced by contact with other sculptors specializing in animal themes, such as François Pompon and Édouard-Marcel Sandoz. Fascinated by animals, she dedicated her work to their study, creating realistic sculptures born from the careful observation of the different creatures. A very prolific artist, she made hundreds of animals, including horses, monkeys, gazelles, panthers, dogs, dromedaries... using materials such as ceramics, granite and marble, but especially bronze, and always following the Art Deco style. Several of her works were purchased by the City of Paris and the city of New York
