Indian miniature painting of a Mughal court scene
Fine quality antique Indian miniature gouache painting of a Mughal court scene with an Emperor and six of his wives set in a palace courtyard.
The painting is well-executed with the faces, costumes and antique jewellery picked out in fine detail. The Emperor and the favourite wife kneel on a carpet while being attended to by the other women, with a water garden, part of the Palace and courtyard walls depicted in the background.
It is difficult to date, but is most likely to be 20th Century rather than 19th Century.
The Emperor depicted in this painting is probably Akbar, the greatest of the Mughal Emperors who reigned from 1556 to 1605 and extended Mughal power over most of the Indian subcontinent.
Condition: The painting is in excellent condition and sits within a blue mount in a gilt wooden frame. The painting has not been removed from the frame so the condition of the paper margins, which are not in view, are unknown. The framing appears to be relatively recent and is in excellent condition.
Size:
Frame 45 cm x 35.5 cm (17 3/4" x 14")
Image 17.5 cm x 12.5 cm (7" x 4 3/4")
Postage & Packing: £6.50 within the UK. Please contact us for a quote to an overseas destination.
