H.W.Phelan Gibb 1870-1948 Oil Canvas Cattle
We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely oil on canvas from the celebrated post impressionist artist HENRY WILLIAM PHELAN GIBB, who has signed the painting H.W.P.G. in the lower right hand corner and inscribed it verso Loch Etive H. W. P. Gibb. The painting depicts Loch Etive on a summer day, with the waters of the loch very still, and two cattle watering down by the water's edge.
We date this painting to 1895-1900 for the following reason. The artist was born Henry William Gibb in Alnwick, Northumberland in 1870, son of the artist Thomas Henry Gibb and brother of the artist Sadie Gibb. Until 1895 he used the signature H. W. Gibb and then began using his Grandmother's maiden name Phelan (pronounced Faylan) after the initials H.W., later describing himself of Henry or Harry Phelan Gibb or just Phelan Gibb. The subject of the painting is very similar to that of his father, but in a looser style.
He was initially taught by his father, as was his sister, but he also studied in Newcastle, Edinburgh, Antwerp and Munich, as well as Paris under Jean Paul Laurens, where he lived for 20 years and was much influenced by the work of Cezanne.
His first one-man exhibition was at the Baillie Gallery in 1911 but he also exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, AAA, Wertheim, Alpine and Redfern Galleries, RHA, RSA and his work was shown at the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art in New York. One of his watercolours is in the Tate Gallery and another of his paintings is in the V & A. His best Post Impressionist work was produced in the 1910-1920 period.
Between the wars he became impoverished and died of a heart attack in Great Hampden, Buckinghamshire on the 15th October 1948.
