Huge 19th Century hand blown glass demi john
This is a monumental deep olive green glass demi john or carboy for storing wine, hand-blown and free-formed, dating from 19th century or early part of 20th century. It is believed to be Italian in origin.
It is an early example because it has a cut top and a hand-applied collar on the neck. The top was cut from the rod after it was blown into an asymmetrical balloon shape. The collar was applied to prevent any fractures caused by the cutting propagating into the main body. This fine example is free of any such fractures.
It would originally been kept inside a wicker basket but the wicker rotted away a long time ago as is nearly always the case with older examples such as this.
Its asymmetric shape together with all the imperfections in the glass caused by its hand wrought nature, such as bubbles and striations, give this bottle a charm which is absent on later, mould produced examples.
Size:
Height 66 cm (26")
Diameter 48 cm (19")
You can gauge the size of the demi john from the coffee mug in one of the pictures and the top of a Regency breakfast table in the last photograph.
Condition: It is in excellent condition with just a few scratches, particularly, on the base as you would expect given its age. There is still a little detritus on the inside surface which we have been unable to remove.
Delivery: This demi-john can be delivered to anywhere on mainland England and most of Wales for £45 by our trusted delivery man who is an expert in transporting antique furniture and artwork. Any other items which you may wish to purchase at the same time would only incur a small, if any, incremental charge for their delivery. Please contact us if you wish to purchase several items at the same time. There may also be an option to post this item if we have a big enough box to put it in allowing plenty of packaging material around it. Please contact us if you wish to explore this option.
You are also welcome to collect in person from the Tunbridge Wells area.
