Highland scene oil painting by Wilson Hepple

1 of 6
A fine oil on canvas highland scene by highly regarded Newcastle artist Wilson Hepple (1854-1937). The painting shows a meeting of two figures (one on horseback) along a lane in a glen with cottage in the background. To the side and centre of the painting a group of highland cattle are inquisitive about a sheepdog. The work as one would expect of the artist is particularly good in capturing the animals but the whole painting is a really good example of it's genre. The painting is signed and dated to the lower left 'Wilson Hepple 06'.
Wilson Hepple was born and lived in Newcastle, he trained at the Newcastle School of Art but was largely self taught. He exhibited largely in the North and was particular fond of painting cats and horses, works which now fetch considerable sums. He was a founder member of the Berwick Club in Newcastle and exhibited there and his work is represented in several public collections.
The painting has been professionally cleaned and a very small hole repaired. It is mounted in a period glilt frame which it has been in for some time, it does have some slight damage which has been coloured on the inside of the frame. It is not obvious and not distracting.
This is an unsual work by a highly desirable northern artist and a great example of highland painting.
