Henry Ryland 19th Century Pre Raphaelite Prints
In excellent and original condition, these 19th century HENRY RYLAND (1856-1924) framed sepia prints, of 'ROSALBA' AND 'ROSAMUNDA', are original lithographs, for The London Autotype Company, each with original frame and mount (25cm x 18cm)
Offered as a pair rather than individually, they are stunning images and together have a particular magic. The images feature Rosalba (1891) looking right, Rosamunda (1892) looking left.
Ryland was a prolific British painter, book illustrator, decorator and designer, best known for his depictions of beautiful women garbed in ancient Greek or Medieval costumes. Ryland is recognized as the foremost of the neoclassical painters working in watercolour and is frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy. Ryland’s style shows similarities to both the Pre-Raphaelites, such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, as seen in these two pictures, and Neo-Classical painters like Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
Condition: The pictures are in excellent condition, all original apart from the backboards which look to be later replacements. The oak frame is undamaged, and the gilt slips show period patina we assume the glass is also original.
HISTORICAL NOTE:
Born in 1856 in Biggleswade, United Kingdom, Ryland first studied at the Royal College of Art in London and then in Paris under Jules Joseph Lefebvre at the Académie Julian.
He exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, and from 1890 at the Royal Academy. He also was a regular exhibitor at the New Gallery and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (formerly the New Society of Painters in Water Colours). He became a full member of the latter institution.
During 1890–1910, the artist created illustrations for English Illustrated magazine and designed the cover for The Quiver, a periodical focused on morality. Ryland died on 23 November 1924, in London, United Kingdom. Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
The Company is a distance selling business and as such abides by all current HM Government consumer regulations that apply to pre-owned, second hand, antique items sold online.
We welcome purchases from all over the world, however, we do not take any responsibility or pay for import charges and taxes that non UK purchasers may accrue.
