Information about Henry Pickering.
Henry Pickering was an English portrait painter active in the mid-18th century, best known for his refined and competent likenesses of provincial British patrons. Born around 1720, Pickering belongs to a generation of artists working in the period between the dominance of Sir Godfrey Kneller and the later rise of figures such as Joshua Reynolds. Although never among the most famous painters of his day, he enjoyed a solid professional career and produced work of consistently good quality.
Early in his life, Pickering is believed to have travelled to Italy, where he would have encountered continental approaches to composition, colour, and classical balance. This experience helped shape his style, which blends English portrait traditions with a measured elegance derived from European models. After returning to England around 1740, he established himself as a portrait painter, eventually working largely in the north of England, particularly around Manchester and the surrounding counties.
Pickering specialised in oil portraits of gentlemen, ladies, clergy, and family groups. His sitters are typically shown in three-quarter or half-length poses, dressed in fashionable contemporary costume, with careful attention paid to facial likeness and social status. Like many painters of the period, he often collaborated with specialist drapery painters—such as Joseph van Aken—who were responsible for the elaborate rendering of clothing, allowing Pickering to focus on the head and expression. His style is closely related to that of Thomas Hudson and reflects the lingering influence of Kneller in its clarity, restraint, and formal presentation.
Although he worked primarily for regional patrons rather than the London elite, Pickering’s reputation was strong enough that some of his portraits were engraved and circulated as prints, extending their reach beyond the original commissions. Several of his works survive today in British public collections, including those of the National Trust and the National Portrait Gallery, as well as in private hands.
Henry Pickering likely died around 1770 or 1771. Today he is remembered as a capable and accomplished portraitist whose work provides valuable insight into the tastes, fashions, and social aspirations of 18th-century provincial England.
