Harry Sutton Palmer RBA RI Watercolour Leith Hill Harry Sutton Palmer RBA RI 1853-1933 %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this large, lovely watercolour by the highly regarded watercolour artist Harry Sutton Palmer. The watercolour depicts Leith Hill from Ockley in Surrey and shows Leith Hill Tower, which is a Gothic folly, now administered by the National Trust, on the horizon. The painting is unsigned, but comes with full provenance, as it was sold with two others by Christie's after the death of the artist in 1933. This provenance will, of course, be supplied with the painting. We show a photograph of all the items of provenance, including a declaration by Christie's, a signed declaration by the executors of the artist to the purchaser of the lot of three that it was removed from the studio of the artist and his address and a part of the catalogue from Christie's showing the lot and the name of the painting. This view, entitled Springtime, had been painted by the artist previously, with only very slight differences, and was sold at Sotheby's London W14 on 1st May 2002, Lot 59 for £1,410 inclusive.

Harry Sutton Palmer, not Harold as sometimes thought, was born Harry Sutton Palmer in Plymouth, Devon in the first quarter of 1853 (not 1854 as widely stated). His birth year has been verified, as has the date of his death, 8th May, 1933 and his obituary, which states that he died at the age of 80 has been viewed, so there is no doubt. He was the son of an artist, John Palmer and was living in St. Pancras, with his parents and his brother Edward S. Palmer and his sister Susan S. Palmer. By 1881 and aged 28, he was living in Islington with his brother's widow and his niece.

He is missing from the 1891 census records as he must have been in America at that time as, on September 25th, 1889 at San Jose, California, he married Maud (born 1863), second daughter of Judge J. H. Moore. He must have stayed in California for some time, as his daughter Camille was born there in 1896. By 1901, the family had returned to England and were living at 10 Newton Grove, Acton, Brentford, Middx. with two servants. In 1911, the family had mov ed to No. 5 The Orchard, Bedford Park, a large house with 12 rooms and they had a cook and a housemaid.

During WWI, his daughter married an American airman of the United Stated Navy, Lieutenant Benjamin Harrison Wyatt, who she met during his tour of operations in the UK. Her father crossed the Atlantic alone in 1926 and 1927 via the White Star Line's Liners Baltic and Majestic, presumably to visit her. He died in 1933, at Burlington Cottage, Heathfield Terrace, Turnham Green, London W6, leaving nett effects of £50,848, which was a huge sum in those days, which brings us to his artistic career.

He was a prolific watercolourist, having turned from still life to landscapes in his 20s and painted in Surrey, Berkshire, the Lake District and Scotland. The majority of his landscapes being painted in Surrey, as indeed is this example. He studied art at the Royal Academy Schools in Kensington for two years, winning a gold medal in his second year, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1870. Although he primarily exhibited at the London galleries, he also exhibited in Manchester and at the Walker in Liverpool. He was elected Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1892 and Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1920. He had his first one-man show in 1880, followed by many others in London and 2 in New York.

There are examples of his work in the V & A, Sydney Art Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, etc.

He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, British Watercolour Artists up to 1920 by H. Mallalieu and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 1/8" pale bronze frame to complement. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
