Hannah Frank pencil signed print
A signed print by Hannah Frank depicting an Art Nouveau/Aubrey Beardsley style sinuous female figure amid grasses and a bird in flight.
The actual image measures 37cm x 26cm, the picture in its entirety measures 51cm x 38.5cm. Good condition throughout. Signed and (possibly) dated 1950 in the print and pencil signed as shown.
Hannah Frank, artist and sculptor, was born on 23 August 1908 in Glasgow. Frank was the daughter of Jewish Russian migrants and grew up in Glasgow's expanding Jewish community in Gorbals and, apart from her evening studies at the Glasgow School of Art, Hannah also attended Glasgow University between 1927 and 1932 where she regularly provided illustrations for the university magazine using the name Al Aaraaf. The influences of artists such as the McDonald sisters, Jessie King, Aubrey Beardsley, Harry Clark and John Duncan can be seen in her work.
In the 1950s Hannah took up sculpture studying with Benno Schotz, who was head of sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art, and who was later appointed the Queen's Sculptor in Ordinary. Hannah's drawings and sculpture have previously been exhibited in the Royal Glasgow Institute, the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy.
Frank continued to sculpt into her early 90s. Her 100th birthday was celebrated with the opening of an exhibition of her work at Glasgow University and a reception a month later in the Scottish Parliament. She died on 18 December 2008 and in 2009 received two posthumous awards: Glasgow City Council's Lord Provost's award for Art and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Glasgow.
Please note that if posted overseas will be removed from frame as otherwise shipping will be prohibitively expensive.
