Gustave de Breanski 19th C. Oil/Can Loch Katrine
We are delighted to offer this lovely oil on canvas by the artist GUSTAVE De BREANSKI, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and signed and entitled it verso Loch Katrine Ellen's Isle DE. B. This is a subject that the artist painted several times. The painting is one of a pair by this artist that we are currently listing. Please see our listings for the other. Ellen's Isle is a small island in Loch Katrine, which is in The Trossachs National Park in Scotland. There is a fisherman in his small boat out on the loch.
GUSTAVE DE BREANSKI, circa 1856-1898, is the younger brother of the famous ALFRED DE BREANSKI, and his son ALFRED FONTVILLE DE BREANSKI. His sister Julia was also an artist, as well as his nephew, Arthur De Breanski. They were all prolific artists. He lived in Cookham Berkshire in 1880, as did his brother, but moved to Kent and then to London by 1890.
Gustave painted landscapes, highland scenes, marines and coastal views, although he specialised in marine and coastal. He painted similarly to his brother but in a broader and more impressionist style.
He exhibited 8 paintings at the Royal Academy, 40 at The Royal Society of British Artists, 7 at The Royal Hibernian Academy, 4 each at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery, as well as at other exhibitions in London and the provinces. His exhibition history in London up to 1893 is listed in Gray's Dictionary.
