Great 17th century painting, The Taking of Christ
Antique Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil artwork on canvas depicting a religious subject, the capture of Christ in the garden of olives. On the left, Jesus is joined by Judas Iscariot who indicates to the soldiers the person to arrest with a kiss. On the right, Peter attacks a servant of the High Priest and cuts off his ear, but Jesus stops him and heals the servant by touching his wound. A painting of excellent pictorial quality which can be seen in particular in the masterful use of the chiaroscuro technique to create a night scene of great charm. Painting of considerable size, for antique dealers and collectors of sacred paintings from the high period. Spectacular 20th century frame in carved and gilded wood, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. Painting that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and restoration of color in some places. Overall in good state of conservation. Sight size H 108 x W 136 cm.
