Grand Tour oil portrait of Michelangelo
A wonderful Grand Tour period portrait of Michelangelo after the Renaissance original by Marcello Venusti. The portrait is in oil on card and on the reverse has an inscription in Italian relating to the purchase in Italy and a clipping from a country house sale catalogue where it must have been sold, looks like Stretton House Leicestershire. The painting is mounted in the original superb quality, gilt wood Florentine frame. This is a great period painting has the look of a stately home with the grand tour association and obviously having spent much of its life in an English country house. The whole is in very good condition, there is some slight cracking to the painting and the frame has had some restoration and repair over the years. C.1830.
