G.Percival Gaskell Oil Dtd. 1886 River Scene
We are delighted to offer for sale this rare original oil on canvas laid to board, by the artist GEORGE PERCIVAL GASKELL, who has signed the painting G. Percival Gaskell in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1886. The painting depicts a quiet bend in a very shallow river, with a pebbly foreshore to the lower right foreground. There is a patchwork of fields covering the slopes of the hills to the left and a cottage further away along the river. The dawn sky is tinged pink and green.
GEORGE PERCIVAL GASKELL, RBA RE was born in either Saltaire or Shipley in Yorkshire on lst January 1868. He studied at Cambridge and the Royal College of Art Schools in Kensington, as well as in Italy and Paris. He was a landscape painter in oils and watercolour as an accomplished engraver and etcher. He became the Principal of the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art.
He exhibited widely in this country, as well as at the Paris Salon and in Italy. He exhibited 60 paintings at The Royal Academy, 101 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 2 at The Royal Scottish Academy, 2 at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, 81 at The Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers, 19 at The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 3 at The Royal Hibernian Academy, 3 at The Royal Oil Painters Institute, 1 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, 2 at the Manchester City Art Gallery, 5 at The Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham and 10 at The Fine Art Society.
He was elected a full Member of The Royal Society of British Artists in 1896 and a Member of The Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers in 1908. He was also a Member of the Art Workers Guild.
