Born and educated in London, Gordon Howes joined the Natural History Museum in 1968 as a scientific assistant in the fishes section. Besides cataloging and researching the Fishes Collections Gordon published over 40 scientific papers on freshwater and deep-sea fishes. He also collected and observed fishes in their natural habitats in Africa, and North & South America. His paintings of fishes have been exhibited in London, Johannesburg and in a solo exhibition at the Natural History Museum Geneva. Examples of his work are in corporate collections such as the Fishmongers Livery Company, London. Gordon Howes retired from the post of Curator of Fishes in 1993 and moved to Sussex to devote more time to painting and travelling. During this time he worked on illustrating books and technical publications. He also painted English landscapes and wildlife and had a number of local exhibitions. By contrast he travelled widely in the Southern United States painting desert and coastal landscapes, many of which are in private collections in the USA. His favoured medium was gouache but he sometimes combined it with acrylic, pencil and crayon. Please contact me if you require any additional images or information regarding this item.
