Gerard Sutcliffe 19th C. Marine Oil Sail & Steam
We are offering for sale this very well executed marine oil painting by the artist Gerard Sutcliffe, who has signed the painting G. Sutcliffe in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a gaff rigged sailing boat with a wooden clinker built hull. Her brown sails are billowing in the stiff wind. She is followed by a single funnelled steamer, with further shipping in the distance. She has a crew of two.
We have found some listings for this artist, with one being signed Gerard Sutcliffe, and the other just G. Sutcliffe. However, after a search on findmypast, we were unable to find a single Gerard Sutcliffe born prior to the 1920s,so have come to the conclusion that it is a pseudonym for another artist. Unfortunately, we cannot, therefore, provide any biographical information about him or possibly her, other than to say that he or she specialised in marine oil paintings.
The painting is framed in what we believe to be its original 4 1/4 inch ornate gilt frame and slip. It will be supplied with all new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 23 5/8 x 15 5/8 inches - 60cm x 39.75cm
Frame size: 32 1/8 x 24 1/8 inches - 81.6cm x 61.25cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. The canvas is clean and taut with no repairs or paint loss. There is some craquelure and stretcher marks consistent with age. The frame is in good condition with some minor cracking and historic repairs but no visible losses.
