Georgian Silkwork Map Picture of England c.1800-20
The George III/Regency period silkwork map of England of good size, in unrestored order, presented in its original gilded moulded frame and mounted on board, depicting the counties of England and Wales, set within an oval floral banded border and with Britannia, the female personification of Britain, to one corner, surviving from the first quarter of nineteenth century England.
The picture and frame are both in decorative and slightly tired condition but remain stable, beautifully part decayed and in original un-meddled with condition, which is always very appealing. The threads that remain, which is the majority, show good colour, the whole having four areas of tearing to the amber ivory silk background, which is creased, though the picture is still a very attractive entity in its entirety. Please refer to the photographs for full visual reference. The work sits in the original frame, which is beautifully worn, with the pink bole showing in some areas and the piece is glazed to protect it for further generations.
During the Georgian period, silkworks were a popular pastime, with subjects often being map related or focusing on botany, fashion and the natural world. The addition of the figure of Britannia is a nice addition to this particular example, as is the fact it has retained its original frame.
A golden shimmer of Rule, Britannia!
