Georgian Ash & Elm Windsor Chair With Maker's Mark

A Georgian saddle seated bow back ash & elm Windsor chair. The chair has a maker's stamp to the rear of 'RR'. The chair is in a good honest unrestored condition with an exceptional patina throughout created from years of use.
We have been able to find just one similar piece with the 'RR' maker's stamp and that piece was located in Norfolk incidentally the same county we acquired this chair. There was only one Norfolk chair maker with the correct initials at the correct time, namely Richard Roberts of Norwich (Furniture History Society 1741). Please note that this is a speculative, not a firm, attribution.
The turned chair legs are typical of the style used c.1770-1840, with a narrow ring and concave motif turned high on the leg with a tapered and wedged tenon above, and a ring and straight foot below. For a similar example to this chair, see Bernard D. Cotton, The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge 1991, p.137, fig. NE123.
There is a historic nail repair to the front left arm support and the neighbouring spindle which has worn beautifully and adds to the character of the piece. The seat has a stretch split to the front but the seat remains strong and stable. There is evidence of historic woodworm to the hoop back and arms (which has been treated in abundance of caution). Overall the chair remains strong and functional.
A lovely honest example.
