George V Silver Cigarette Case, A. Barnett, 1912
This is an elegant George V Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with exquisite chased decoration and a gilt interior. Basically square, the front has a central cartouche with the initials EE expertly engraved within it. The rear is curved to fit comfortably into a pocket and is diagonally split between plain silver and a continuation of the chased decoration.
The cigarette case is made in Birmingham by Arthur Barnett & Co Ltd and dates to the early part of George V's reign in 1912. Arthur Barnett founded his company around 1908, primarily producing items for the discerning gentleman of the time. They remained in business into the late 1920s, when the economic crash saw the end of many luxury goods makers.
Condition is very good with just a couple of truly miniscule dings in the case plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected in an item of this age and use. The hinge and clasp are both in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 8cm / 3.1ins by 8.5cm / 3.3ins and 1.5cm / 0.6ins thick. It weighs a very respectable 95g / 3.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the case are well struck and clear to read. There is a full set on one side showing the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1912 and the A.B.L makers' mark for Arthur Barnett & Co Ltd. The other side has a partial set showing the lion passant and the date letter n.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
