This is a lovely painting from the well known Wirral artist George Thompson, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner in his customary fashion. He has also entitled it 'Chester Cathedral' and dated it '80 on the back of the canvas. The painting depicts a view of Chester Cathedral from across the River Dee, with Cow Lane Bridge to the right, and has a misty quality and subtle toning that is very attractive.

George Thompson was born in Wigan in 1934, but moved to Chester at the age of eleven. He studied Fine Art (painting) at Chester School of Art and gained his ATD (Art Teacher's Diploma), the equivalent of a degree in art which you could not obtain at university at that time. He has been teaching since then in Chester and The Wirral. He lives in West Kirby on the Wirral Peninsula and every summer has a working holiday abroad painting. He has visited Venice, Tuscany, Croatia, Corfu and Ireland.

He has had 1 man exhibitions in Australia, Canada, USA and Japan, as well as the UK and his paintings are in collections worldwide. He has won prizes at the Pastel Society Exhibition, the Mall Galleries in London and the National Scrylic Painters' Association Exhibition. He works in pastels, watercolours, oils and acrylics.

The painting is framed in a 2 3/4" gilt frame with linen insert and white slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
