George Morland Fine Original 18th C. Oil Painting
George Morland (British, 1763 - 1804)
A fine, original, antique oil on canvas painting.
Absolutely charming and very typical of Morland's most-loved subjects. A farmhand lays asleep on a pile of hay in the shade of a rustic barn. Around him, two large 'old spot' pigs feed and a donkey stands in the light of the doorway.
The painting is deftly worked, with thinner 'built' layers of oil along side thicker, more vigorously worked areas. There is a great lightness of touch, with blades of hay picked out with single strokes. The figure of the donkey particularly well-observed, illustrative of just how well Morland knew and understood his subject.
It is signed to the lower left 'G.Morland'
This painting really is a lovely find and a great example of Morland's oeuvre. It is presented in a stunning, 19th century gilt frame, which features a raised design in plaster of oak leaves and acorns. It sets the painting off to great effect.
Provenance:
This work has solid provenance having been in private ownership for many decades. It was acquired from a private fine art collection (owned by a high-ranking aristocratic family with strong connections to a leading British politician of the early 20th Century). I will happily disclose full details to the new owner.
Dimensions:
Approximately 30.5 x 38 cms (excluding frame). Overall, including the frame: 49 x 56 cms
Condition:
The painting has received old restoration (many decades ago). At this time the painting was cleaned and revarnished. It was also relined. Since then it has been untouched. The painting reads well and is clear. There is a small pale area of crazing to the varnish (only) to the upper left area, as shown.
