George Melvin Rennie 1874-1953 Scottish Oil
We are offering for sale this little gem of an oil painting by the Scottish artist GEORGE MELVIN RENNIE, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and signed and inscribed it verso on the stretcher The Coils of Cloud above Ballater The River Muick'.
Ballater is a Victorian town in the centre of Royal Deeside in the Cairngorms National Park. The railway station served Balmoral Castle until its closure in 1963. Balmoral is 8 miles from Ballater and Birkhall is close by. The River Muick is a tributary of the River Dee and flows from Loch Muick.
George Melvin Rennie (1874-1953) was a Scottish artist whose name at birth was MacDuff. He studied art part time at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen and became a full-time artist during the WWI. He opened a studio in Braemar in 1924. His favourite subjects were in the Grampians, but he also painted landscapes of Argyll, Ayrshire, Arran and the west coast of Scotland. He was a prolific artist. He is listed in the Dictionary of Scottish Painters.
