George J. Bailey Superb Still Life Oil Painting
We are pleased to offer for sale this beautifully and cleverly executed Still Life Oil Painting on Canvas by the artist George J. Bailey, who has signed the painting beneath the book to the bottom right. The painting depicts a gentleman, sitting at his desk reading a book by candlelight, with a roemer glass with applied prunts three quarters full of wine next to his decanter. There are two books to the right and an open book with a bookmark in front of him. But where is he, perhaps you are asking? Just look at the reflection in the glass of the decanter and you will see him, with an open book in his hands, to the left of the candle's reflection.
According to the short biography on the reverse of the frame, George J.Bailey studied art at Richmond College of Art in Surrey. He lived and worked in Paris and The Netherlands. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, London and at other London Galleries and had a 1 man exhibition at Segal's Gallery in Los Angeles. All we can add to this, is that there are 3 sales of paintings by this artist, all Still Life in subject, that have been sold in Australia in the 1990s, as they are listed in the Australian Art Sales Index, so it is possible that he moved there, but we cannot confirm this.
The painting is framed in a 2 3/4 bronzed mahogany frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 15 5/8" x 11 5/8" - 39.8cm x 29.5cm
Frame size: 21 1/2" x 17 1/4" - 54.6cm x 43.8cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Excellent. The frame is in very good condition with only very minor wear consistent with age.
