This is a superb quality antique George III oak housekeeper’s food cupboard, circa 1780, originating from the Welsh Marches area1. The cupboard itself boasts an elegant protruding dentil cornice to the upper section above a decorative carved lower section. The sides of the cupboard feature reeded quarter columns and solid oak sides (the superior cupboards typically have oak sides over pine sides). The top section has two lovely raised Arcadian shaped door panels with two small brass knobs and brass escutcheons. The doors have feature the original working lock and a key. Inside, it features a shelf along. Below, the cupboard door is a rare “hat” drawer. Such drawers were designed to be tall so that hats could safely be stored inside without fear of the hats being squashed. Further below, is a bank of three working drawers. All drawers are pine lined and hand dovetailed this is typical of antique furniture from this period and region. The cupboard frame is constructed using a peg construction method. The back of the cupboard boasts its rough sawn hewn boards with original hand made nails. The cupboard features the original oak top, oak backboards and lovely figured oak sides constructed with very good quality wide planks. The cupboard stands Georgian bracket feet. The cupboard boasts a stunning original colour and surface patination, which can only be achieved through age and years of care and wax polishing. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transportation.
The Welsh Marches is a term, which denotes an imprecisely defined area along and around the border between England and Wales in the United Kingdom. The English terms Welsh March, The March of Wales, were originally used in the Middle Ages to denote a more precisely defined territory, the marches between England and the Principality of Wales, in which Marcher lords had specific rights, held to some extent independently of the king of England.
The cupboard has good proportions which makes it a sought after size it was designed to fit into farmhouses with low ceilings. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transport and access into the house.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the kitchen, dining, living room or hallway and there are many storage drawers. This item would certainly grace any home. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
