Gents 9ct gold Waltham wrist watch, 1920s/30s
A gents 9ct gold Waltham wrist watch.
The watch has a hand-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and the serial number 28,177,402 dates it back to 1934.
The watch measures 30mm wide excluding the winding crown and 30mm high excluding the fixed lugs. The case is 9 carat gold and there are hallmarks inside the case back for Birmingham 1924, together with a maker's mark for Aaron Dennison, a prolific manufacturer of cases for various watch manufacturers.
There is a discrepancy between the dates of the case and the movement which tells us that the original movement was replaced some nine years after manufacturer, perhaps remedial work to replace water damaged parts for instance. This would have been an expensive watch when it was new so well worth having a replacement movement fitted.
The back of the watch is very nicely engraved, '4.7.25, to H F Johnson Shields, on his 21st birthday, from the employees of S Johnson Ltd', probably S Johnson Ltd of The Potteries, manufacturers of Burslem Britannia pottery.
The case has general light surface marks, and a “ding” to the side of the case but overall very acceptable for such an early piece.
The lens and the dial are in good condition.
