Gents 1950s Mathey-Tissot automatic wrist watch
Gents 1950s Mathey-Tissot automatic wrist watch.
The watch has a good quality ETA automatic movement which is working nicely. This calibre of movement was made from 1950 until 1954. The movement is signed on the rotor with the Mathey-Tissot name and it is all protected by an inner cover.
Edmond Mathey-Tissot established his business in Les Ponts-de-Martel, Switzerland in 1886. To begin with he concentrated on watches with complications such as repeater watches and then he successfully moved on to chronographs.
The company traded very successfully and in 1899 a new factory was built.
The orders flooded in including one from a Scottish nobleman who placed an order 2,500 watches, one for every man in his son's regiment in the Boer War (gold for Officers and silver for the other ranks).
In 1914, Mathey-Tissot was represented at the Kew Observatory Competition by six Observatory Chronometers capable of split-second timing, all six being rated 'Class A' with the comment 'specially good'.
In 1969 and 1970, Elvis Presley bought several dozen customised Mathey-Tissot automatic watches with 'Elvis Presley' in raised letters around the bezel. He gave them to family, friends, and staff. As well as telling the time, the watches were also a form of pass to privileged rights of access to Presley's concerts and tours.
The watch measures 34mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The case is gold capped which means a generous layer of 14k gold has been applied to the front and sides of the case. The case is in very nice condition, as is the lens with just a short faint scratch, barely discernible to the naked eye.
The signed dial has its original hands, centre seconds hand and outer minute markers. There is a little marking to the dial but overall the condition is very nice.
A new leather strap has been fitted.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
