French 19th Century Chinoiserie shell tray
A 19th century (Napoleon 111) black lacquer, scallop shell, crumb tray. The decoration is a typical European interpretation of the Japanese style popular in France and England during the 19th century. The decoration implies this particular piece is of Japanese origin but this we believe is French, pieces of this type with this particular chinoiserie decoration are generally French although the English were also producing similar at the same time. we date this item to around 1870.
The scallop shell shape was popular in both England and France and one has to take care to consider that, as there was no original trade from Japan until the 1860s and the Europeans had been producing their own version of black lacquer ware for a long time (Japanning had been popular in England from the late 17th century and throughout the 18th and into the 19th).
Rightly these items are seen as works of art and today make great display pieces.
The size of this tray is 12 inches wide and 10 inches front to back, the dish is approximately 1 1/2 inches deep.
Condition: this has been (a long time ago) honestly repaired to one corner of the handle (it is shown clearly in the photographs) there are no other breaks nor chips or cracks, the decoration is largely in tact, a little rubbing but it is far less than one would expect on a piece of this delicacy and age, the decoration is in fact crisp bright and significantly better than a lot of this period lacquer. We have taken into account the old repair when valuing and have priced accordingly. Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
The Company is a distance selling business and as such abides by all current HM Government consumer regulations that apply to pre-owned, second hand, antique items sold online.
We welcome purchases from all over the world, however, we do not take any responsibility or pay for import charges and taxes that non UK purchasers may accrue.
